FACEBOOK FOUNDER TO HELP FUND MAJOR FIGHT AGAINST CANCER

http://ift.tt/1Xw8U4B

Tech billionaire Sean Parker is putting $250-million toward cancer immune therapy, saying it’s at a crucial point and could benefit from research where cost is not an issue.
Sean Parker
Immunotherapy, which enhances one’s immune system to kill cancer cells, is best known since former U.S. president Jimmy Carter was on an immune-based drug treatment when he announced last December he’s cancer free.
The new Parker Institute for Cancer Immunotherapy in San Francisco will fund six American cancer centers with the hope of improving what it sees as slow progress in bettering cancer survival rates.
Parker, the co-founder of music file sharing service Napster and the founding president of Facebook, says he wants to make immunotherpay a front-line treatment.
Currently, it’s only approved as a treatment of last
resort, which Parker says means it’s only used after patients’ immune systems are destroyed by chemotherapy and radiation.

BoC BOOSTS GROWTH OUTLOOK, HOLDS RATE

http://ift.tt/260ffuJ

The Bank of Canada says Ottawa’s multi-billion dollar spending boost in its recent budget turned what would have been a modest downgrade to this year’s growth forecast into an upgrade.
Bank of Canada
The central bank said in its latest quarterly Monetary Policy Report, ”the effects of recently announced fiscal measures will begin to be felt in 2016 and will build through 2017.”
The bank estimates measures announced in the Trudeau government’s maiden budget last month – including roughly $25-billion over two years – will more than offset the negative consequences of a slightly stronger dollar, weaker foreign demand and shrinking investment in the oil sector.
It’s now predicting the economy will grow by 1.7% this year, up from its January forecast of 1.4%.
But even with the increased federal spending, the bank’s lowered its 2017 growth projection from 2.4% to 2.3%.
The Bank of Canada also announced it was keeping its key overnight interest rate at 0.5% – where it’s been since two rate cuts last year.

JIMMY BUFFETT TO HONOUR NORTH CAROLINA SHOWS DESPITE “STUPID LAW”

http://ift.tt/1TR2tKj

Jimmy Buffett says he will honour the two dates he has scheduled in North Carolina even though the state passed what he calls a “stupid law.”

Jimmy Buffett writes on his website, that whether he will do future shows in North Carolina depends on whether the law is changed.

The legislation passed last month overrules LGBT anti-discrimination measures passed by local governments.

It also excludes sexual orientation and gender identity from the state’s anti-discrimination policy.

Buffett says his fans bought tickets before the law was passed and he’s not going to let “stupidity or bigotry” overrule fun with his fans. Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band cancelled their show in Greensboro over the weekend because of the law. And Canada’s Bryan Adams has cancelled a performance in Mississippi to protest that state’s new law that allows religious groups and some private businesses to refuse service to gay couples

RULES TO CHANGE AFTER LIBERALS RAISE $11 MILLION

http://ift.tt/1qHHjD1

Ontario’s electoral office says the Ontario Liberal party has raised more than $11 million over the past year, vastly more than the provincial P.C.’s and N.D.P.
Wynne Liberals
With Premier Kathleen Wynne committed to changing fund raising rules in the province. the opposition parties are crying foul.  N.D.P. Leader Andrea Horwath finds it curious that after their coffers are filled, the Liberals are changing the fundraising rules.  She calls the timing suspect and suggests it will be much harder to compete if the governing Liberals ban corporate and union donations.
But Premier Wynne denies she’s rushing the changes through because her party’s coffers are flush.  She says despite the $11 million dollars in donations, the party remains some $4 million dollars in debt.
